In spring 2026, we became the first HBCU AAUP chapter to affiliate with Higher Education Labor United (HELU). We did so in part because we share HELU's commitment to wall-to-wall campus organizing. We have since partnered with Workers United, another HELU-affiliated union that represents many staff workers at Morehouse and throughout the Atlanta University Center. This fall we are launching a living wage campaign to esnure that every campus worker at the AUC earns a dignified
wage.
In fall 2025 our chapter launched an AUC-wide reading group to study the climate, labor, financial, psychological, and surveillance impacts of the AI industry and to embolden our fight for shared governance in Ed Tech procurement and curriculum development.
In 2024, we commissioned an independent analysis of the College's finances. In response to the report, which exposed long-running underinvestment in the faculty vis-a-vis peer institutions, Morehouse has committed to growing and resourcing the faculty. To request a copy of the report, please contact us.
HBCUs are under attack. This is evident at Virginia State University, where six tenured professors were recently fired without cause. We support the campaign to Reinstate the Fired Six.
Higher education is facing a profound crisis. We support the vision and strategy of United Faculty for the Common Good, and call on HBCU campus workers to organize and amplify their voices as we build a sustainable future for higher education.
In 2025 Morehouse hosted the AAUP-AFT's Summer Institute -- the first such convening at an HBCU. We urge the AAUP-AFT to expand investment in advocacy and campus organizing across all HBCUs.
American universities, including HBCUs, are built upon an extractive global political economy. Our chapter stands in solidarity with the international labor movement and explicitly supports aligned organizations such as Friends of the Congo.
